Clear Labs Releases World’s First GMO Test Based on Next-Generation Sequencing Technology
Menlo Park, California (PRWEB) July 19, 2016 -- Clear Labs, the world’s first food analytics platform for retailers and manufacturers, today released the first genetically modified organism (GMO) test based on Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology. Leveraging the power of their NGS platform, Clear Labs’ new offering identifies all known GMOs worldwide in a single test for a fraction of the cost of traditional Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests, making it the most scalable, accurate, and affordable GMO testing solution.
Testing a single sample for all GMO-related genes is prohibitively expensive because today’s PCR-based GMO tests can only target one GMO-related gene at a time. As a result, most “non-GMO” certification audits are based on documentation reviews, on-site inspections, or limited screening.
Clear Labs’ GMO test sets a new standard because a single NGS-based test can be used to simultaneously identify multiple GMO-related genes, offering comprehensive GMO-testing for a significant fraction of the cost. Clear Labs’ GMO test will soon allow users to quantify the percentage of genetically modified ingredients in any given product and precisely identify which ingredients in a product contain GMOs.
“‘Non-GMO’ labeling is currently based on adherence to outdated best practices and trust relationships between regulators, suppliers, and manufacturers,” said Sasan Amini, CEO and co-founder of Clear Labs. “Our new NGS-based test is going to change all of that. It’s not an incremental improvement, it’s fundamentally new, transformative technology that will help retailers and manufacturers vet their suppliers, stand out on transparency, and scientifically defend their non-GMO claims.”
Clear Labs offers upfront and continuous testing of ingredients and finished products. Food industry customers can also choose between two types of GMO tests: a comprehensive GMO test that covers over 85 percent of GMOs approved worldwide and a crop-specific, deep test that completely covers all known, crop-specific GMOs.
“Our GMO test is the most powerful and precise available, but what’s most exciting about it is the way it ties into our software analytics,” said Mahni Ghorashi, co-founder of Clear Labs. “We surface actionable insights our food-industry customers can use to verify GMO-free claims, screen their suppliers, and rank suppliers based on risk.”
Clear Labs is currently working with a number of leading manufacturers and food brands. Their new comprehensive GMO test is available as a stand-alone offering or bundled with Clear Labs’ core authenticity test. All of the company's tests fully integrate with Clear View, Clear Labs’ SaaS offering, which gives leading food manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers new transparency into their supply chains.
