Continental Van Lines Sponsors Cancer for College’s Event, Taste to Educate
Seattle, WA (PRWEB) March 18, 2015 -- Cancer for College, held its event, Taste to Educate, sponsored by Continental Van Lines and other local companies, at Lucia Restaurant & Bar in the Greenlake area of Seattle on February 23, 2015.
Cancer for College, originally founded in San Diego, California by 2 time cancer survivor Craig Pollard, is a non-profit organization that since its inception in 1994, has granted over $2 million in college scholarships to childhood cancer survivors. The organization recognizes that the minute a child is diagnosed with cancer, a family’s entire savings goes into funding their child’s life-saving medical treatment. Once treatment is over, the family has little to no money left to pay for college.
Taste to Educate was hosted by CFC’s Pacific Northwest Manager, Abby Houck. At the age of 9, Houck was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, and remained in treatment for over two years. Despite the lingering financial burden of treatment costs, Houck refused to let go of her dream of attending the University of Washington. With the help of Cancer for College, Houck graduated from the University of Washington in 2012, and is now dedicated to helping other childhood cancer survivors achieve their dreams of attending college.
Houck’s sold out event, included a four course dinner with wine pairings from Chelan Estate Winery, Fielding Hills Winery, Nefarious Cellars, and Karma Vineyard. Guests were treated to private performances by Comedians Monica Nevi and Brian Moote, speeches by former scholarship recipients, as well as memorabilia signed by Will Ferrell and Seahawks Head Coach, Pete Carroll.
Thanks to sponsors, donations, and ticket sales, in the span of roughly 3 hours, Taste to Educate was able to raise over $30,000 in scholarship money for 2015! The organization’s next event held in the Pacific Northwest will be a Beer & Wine Concert Festival scheduled for this fall.
