Deacon Jones Foundation Selects First High School and Students for Semester-Long Art Scholarship Program
Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) November 27, 2015 -- The Deacon Jones Foundation Young Emerging Artists Education and Scholarship Program announced today that Mojave High School of North Las Vegas is the first high school to participate in the after-school program. At the conclusion of the semester of learning, each participating student will have an artist portfolio of their unique work, and will be eligible for one of three scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to further the students artistic and higher education goals.
Funded by the Deacon Jones Foundation and presented by Wirtz Beverage Nevada, the Young Emerging Artists Education and Scholarship Program will help students in their pursuit of higher education, relieving certain financial pressures. With a national decline in public funding for the arts, this scholarship program is essential to the growth of the creative minds of the future.
“The combination of artistic achievement and community leadership exhibited by these young, talented students, underscores the core values of this scholarship program,” said Elizabeth Jones, founder and president, of the Deacon Jones Foundation. “Supporting students in the arts will build their confidence, and assist in providing the funding needed to develop their craft.”
This is the first year for The Young Emerging Artists Education and Scholarship Program. The after-school program accepted 35 students for the fall semester and will focus on the visual arts. Future programs will incorporate the performing arts for a specific semester. Each participating student will be eligible for one of three scholarships in the amounts of $5,000, $1,500, and $500. A diverse panel will evaluate the portfolios at the end of the semester, taking into consideration creativity, demonstrated leadership skills, and their commitment to the arts.
The goal of The Young Emerging Artists Education and Scholarship Program is to provide after school arts programs in public high schools nationwide, building future leaders, and supporting those dedicated to the arts. The program is funded through the Foundation and the generous support of corporate and individual sponsors. The scholarships are designed to help students who are leaders, have an interest in the arts, but who may not have the financial means to attend college or a school of higher learning.
The Deacon Jones Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in 1997 by Deacon and Elizabeth Jones.
