FHSSA Expands Hospice and Palliative Care Partnerships Globally Under New Name: Global Partners in Care
Alexandria, Va (PRWEB) March 31, 2014 -- FHSSA or Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa announced Thursday that the organization is expanding its mission and will now be known as Global Partners in Care. The announcement was made at the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization 29th Annual Management in Leadership Conference, an event that brings over 1,200 hospice and palliative care professionals to the Washington, DC area each spring.
FHSSA, founded in 1999, was established to mobilize a response to the sub-Saharan HIV/AIDS pandemic and support African’s hospice and palliative care programs’ ability to provide compassionate care. In 2004, FHSSA became an affiliate of NHPCO. Since then, U.S. partners have provided over $3.5 million to organizations in developing countries. Today, there are over 80 U.S. hospice and palliative organizations /African palliative care partnerships.
“We have received continuous inquiries from our U.S. hospice membership to expand our partnership program to other regions of the world outside of Africa,” says NHPCO’s President and CEO J. Donald Schumacher. “Based on the evidence that 80% of the global need for palliative care is in low- and middle-income countries (which represent 83% of the world’s population) and increasing interest from NHPCO members, we determined that expanding the scope of FHSSA’s mission was not only feasible, but necessary.”
Global Partners in Care provides partnership opportunities for U.S. hospice and palliative care organizations to make a commitment to support a hospice and palliative care organization in a developing country. Partners engage in capacity-building, strategic planning, education, fundraising, and technical assistance to expand and improve services for those in need.
“In developing countries, the lack of resources within the healthcare system make accessing care extremely difficult,” says NHPCO Chief Operating Officer John Mastrojohn. “We know there is a great need for comprehensive compassionate care and through Global Partners in Care, our goal is to improve access and enhance care.”
