Golden Meadows Announces Recent Success With AKC's Canine Good Citizen Testing
Moorpark, California (PRWEB) November 21, 2013 -- According to numerous insurance agencies, multiple homeowner's associations and resolutions passed by the United States government, the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen program holds dogs to behavioral standards to which all dogs should adhere. Having consistently trained Golden Retriever puppies by the AKC's good citizenship standards, the staff of Golden Meadows Retrievers is no stranger to the stringent guidelines required for dogs to become good citizens. Golden Meadows recently announced another 6 of their dogs passed the CGC testing to be deemed good canine citizens.
Nikki Asher of Golden Meadows confirmed, "Our dogs who passed during this series of testing were Archie, Joy, Maurice, Wesley, Hazel and Lila, who is a service dog to be. Testing is important for creating well trained show dogs as well as for a number of other purposes our dogs may have in life. In order to prepare them for testing, and for life as pets or service and show dogs, we train our puppies using the Von Falconer Way and the Rule of 7."
The American Kennel Club website states CGC testing covers a total of 10 areas with restrictions on methods used to control dogs during the course of the tests. Overly restrictive harnesses, pinch collars and shock collars are not permitted, nor are treats and toys allowed as incentives for good behavior. Praise and encouragement may be used, as well as petting between sections of the tests. Dogs must show exemplary performance in the areas of accepting non-threatening strangers and allowing petting without negative reactions.
Also included are tolerance to grooming and inspections, walking on a loose lead and maintaining composure in a crowd. The dogs' ability to follow common commands are evaluated, as are reactions to other pets and everyday distractions. The last section of testing focuses on whether the dogs maintain their good behavior when left with someone other than their trainer. All sections must be passed before a dog can be considered a Canine Good Citizen.
Golden Meadows has an extremely high success rate for CGC testing, which can be partially attributed to their Von Falconer Way training. This method conditions puppies from a very young age to deal with a number of the issues that arise during testing as well as life, such as interactions with strangers and resistance to babies crying, traffic and other disturbances. Becoming a good citizen renders canines eligible for service and therapy work; in addition, good citizenship also allows for a greater range of insurance coverage options and enables dogs to live in pet friendly condominium and apartment complexes.
Cynthia Brevik was the CGC evaluator for Golden Meadows and when asked how the test went for the puppies replied, "All of the Golden Meadows dogs who were tested on November 14th successfully passed their certification!"
Concluded Asher, "We are very proud of our latest Canine Good Citizens, and we plan to continue along these lines of success. A number of our trained Golden Retrievers are currently working in therapy and service programs. Many of them have gone on to become AKC and IABCA champion show dogs. All our dogs are guaranteed to come from excellent pedigrees and have sweet temperaments, great looks and excellent training."
