Q: So tell us about yourself?
A: My Name is Isaac Jackson, I’m currently based in Knoxville. I attended Indiana University Southeast and studied Supply Chain and Informations Systems and minored Economics; I was very involved in school I initially went to school to play basketball and ended up finishing my collegiate career playing tennis. I was the secretary of the Student Government, VP of College politics, I lastly was the founder and President of the Tau-Kappa chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
Q: Can you explain what your company does and where you are based?
A: JetWave International is an outsourced sales and marketing company. We work with fortune 500 companies to help improve their brand awareness. Our firm primarily focuses on event and promotional marketing connecting with customers on a personal level. By communicating face to face with potential customers, our representatives can get a better feel for their wants and needs, and we can now cater to the customer so they can have the utmost satisfaction. Our office is also based in Knoxville. We are five minutes from the University of Tennessee Campus, which is great as we are hoping to attract the top college talent who are looking for a fun, fast-paced and rewarding environment.
Q: What has been your biggest motivation to start your own business?
A: My parents. They taught me about the importance hard work from a very young age - since I was able to walk. My parents were blue collar workers who tried to help the world be a better place. My parents always said I need to make something with my life as I was very competitive, and they didn't want me to have to work for someone else. I have a creative mindset, and I like to dream big. I've always felt that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to.
Going through the business world working at Sherwin Williams, Anheuser-Busch, and Faurecia Automotive taught me a lot. I understood that I wanted more out of life and I always outworked my bosses. I lost a lot of respect for the title of Manager. I felt like I was qualified to be a Manager even though I had minimal experience.
Therefore, I started doing my managers tasks and took on a lot more responsibilities and workload. From there I just wanted to travel in my time off because I am an explorer at heart. I love the open sea and all the views and the adventures of life which is why my business name is about travelling. When I realized I couldn’t just transfer from one office location to another, I got even more frustrated and realized that if I started my own business I could go to any city that I wanted to and I could live there.
Furthermore, during my younger years, I wanted to be a pro athlete. I played Basketball and then went to finish my sports career in college playing tennis. But I always had a real passion for basketball. I was a natural shooting guard. I played a lot with my college buddy CJ and went semi-pro. I soon realized that I wanted to focus on nurturing my entrepreneurial spirit so I could set up a life for my future family.
Q: What would you say is the number one misconception of the sales industry and what are you doing to dispel that?
A: The biggest misconception is that you are born with a talent for sales, or that people don’t have the personality for sales. There is a simple quote from Robert Half that I heard that has stayed with me; "hard work without talent is a shame, talent without handwork is a tragedy”. This made me realize that no-one is born with a secret sauce; it takes time and development to be good at your profession.
If you take pro athletes, for example, many believe they are just gifted, or they got lucky, but what they fail to understand is that its all down to hard work and they put an incredible amount of effort to achieve the results they do. Just like doctors they put 8 years into an educational program and an additional 4 years doing clinicals. All they did was work hard and had a great attitude and achieved their goals. The sales industry is no different if you focus on actions and are willing to put in the work, results will come.
Q: What sets your company apart from others in the industry?
A: I think the main thing that sets us apart is the family atmosphere that we create.
We are all such a tight-knit group, and there is a real sense of camaraderie. More often than not we will spend time with each other after work as well, we head to bars, karaoke, mini golf, basketball and football games and just generally have a great time with one another. We have a really strong cohesive workforce here. We all want the best for each other, and everyone pulls together so that we can all achieve together.
Q: What are your company's goals for the next five years?
A: In the next two years we plan on expanding throughout the Midwest and South region and taking over the market.
We have our eyes set on the following cities: Nashville, Jackson, MS, Dallas TX, Kansas City MO, St Louis MO Cincinnati OH Huntington WV Charlotte NC, Greenville SC. From there we plan on expanding Internationally as well. We have set the following locations in our sights.
-Budapest Hungary
-Oradea, Romania
-Buenos Aires
-Singapore
-Prague
In the next two to three years we plan on having a total of 50 offices in the US and beginning to start our expansions internationally, and within five years we plan on having more than 100 offices up and running around the world.
My personal goal for the company is to focus on the individual development of each of our professionals and create a foundation that can lead them to succeed in whatever their dreams are. I want everyone to dream big and achieve their goals, and I want to help each of them out along the way. I also want to be involved throughout the community and create a sense of belonging to our community.
Q: How do you generate new ideas?
A: We generate new ideas through our professionals themselves. During meetings, everyone is encouraged to voice their ideas, and we brainstorm how we can make them better while bouncing ideas off each other. This method never fails to deliver good ideas.
Q: Do you believe that there is one set formula for success as an entrepreneur?
A: Yes - I believe it all comes down to hard work, enjoying what you do and having the right mentality and positive attitude.
Q: What types of attributes do you look for in a candidate when you are recruiting?
A: We look for an outgoing, fun spirited individuals who are hungry to learn. We also look for individuals who want to be the best. If anyone reading this has all of those traits, we have all the tools here to help them and strive to reach the top of their game.
Q: What advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
A: For all the entrepreneurs out there, you just have to do what others aren’t willing to do. That means you need to be prepared to invest more than others, get an outside coach or mentor and don’t settle for anything less than the best. You always find those that achieve the most and duplicate them, and always be the first in and last to leave.
Q: What and who inspire’s you?
A: My parents as I’ve answered before. But I also had a fantastic professor called Paul Pittman. He changed my view on the supply chain world. He was also in a college political club, I was involved with, and he was just such a great guy.
