June Synergy Meeting aligns INCREASE tutors and Options for College counselors
(PRWEB) July 07, 2015 -- At INCREASE, the approach is based on synergy between tutoring and college counseling. After all, why study if you’re not going to get in? Endless practice exams are pointless and demoralizing. Students should be studying what will actually help them get into college, and their tutors should work with the right goals in mind.
On June 16th, 2015, INCREASE tutors and Options for College Counselors conducted a Synergy Meeting at Options for College offices – a chance for the team to meet and realign on their shared students and goals.
To kick off the meeting, tutors were given an overview of how Options for College counselors guide students through the admissions process using The Way There, OFC's proprietary curriculum that takes students through the three phases of college admissions. Then, tutors and counselors reviewed each student’s case in detail. Tutors were asked to provide estimates of an upper and lower score range for each student. Counselors also got the tutor’s perspective on whether or not they needed more time with the student or if there was something in the way (for example, anxiety or failure to finish assignments), and shared ideas on how to best help each student.
Keith Berman, Options for College President, said of the event, “It was really magical to have our entire staff, whose sole purpose is to see students be their best, all in the room together discussing how to help students and families get there. When you were in the room, you could tell very special work was going on – work that would serve these students the rest of their lives.”
Options for College Managing Counselor Stephanie Consoli summarized the day: “Overall, I think this was a very important meeting for the tutors to have. To meet each other, share methods, and get a pep talk from us about what our high expectations are…really pushing the students to get more and achieve more.”
