Main Line Audiology Consultants Educates Patients on How to Read Their Audiogram
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) May 04, 2015 -- The key to achieving better hearing is found in the audiogram, a graph that charts the precise characteristics of an individual’s hearing loss. The audiogram will show what type of hearing loss a person has, how severe it is, if they are a candidate for hearing aids, and how the hearing aids should be programmed.
Without the audiogram, hearing specialists can’t precede to correct their patient’s hearing, yet most people don’t take the time to learn how to read one. And while it seems difficult to read, the audiogram is actually rather straightforward.
According to Main Line Audiology, just because the audiogram looks complicated at first glance doesn’t mean that it’s difficult to read. The audiogram is really just a graph that records sound volume on the vertical axis and sound frequency on the horizontal axis.
At its most basic level, the audiogram is simply a chart that graphs two variables, showing how well an individual can hear certain frequencies at different volumes. For each sound frequency, the hearing specialist marks the lowest decibel volume at which the patient can hear the sound 50% of the time. So what will normal hearing look like, compared to those with hearing loss?
Individuals with normal hearing should be able to perceive each sound frequency level, from 125 to 8000 Hz, at 0-25 decibels. Since many cases of hearing loss are in the higher frequencies, the audiogram would have a downward sloping line from the top left corner of the chart sloping downward horizontally to the right, according to Main Line Audiology.
Patients have the right to request a copy of their audiogram after their hearing test is completed, and should have enough knowledge to be able to discuss the results with a hearing specialist.
