“A percentage of my children’s book proceeds will go towards finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. Parents need to understand that this disease can happen to any child. I’m still in shock that my daughter has it. And I’m even in more shock when people say, ‘If she just stopped eating sweets, she’d be healthy.’ My daughter is thin and active, and sweets had nothing to do with her getting this disease. It happened randomly. This disease is so different than type 2 diabetes,” said Melissa.
Melissa is a huge advocate and supporter for type 1 diabetes. Her daughter was diagnosed with this life-altering disease on November 4, 2011. It is believed that a virus triggered this disease. Children living with this disease have to prick their fingers 8 – 12 times a day and are 100% insulin dependent until there is a cure. Managing a type 1 diabetic child’s blood sugar isn’t easy. Everything affects it—the weather, what they eat, worrying about taking an exam, excitement during a sports tournament, and even dreaming during sleep.
