My Positive Perspective Airs Episode About Cultures Adapting to Change with the Charleston’s Gullah Lady, Sharon Murray
Charleston, SC (PRWEB) June 10, 2014 -- On June 9, 2014, My Positive Perspective aired an episode that discussed the different things the Gullah culture brought to the Charleston area. Appearing on the episode along with the host Jason Deierlein was guest Sharon Murray, who is known as the “Gullah Lady.” As the episode started, Deierlein says, “Your title of the Gullah lady implies that you have a good bit of knowledge of what the Gullah culture brought to the Charleston area. Could you talk about that?” Murray replies, “The Gullah culture is very important to Charleston in that a lot of the West African ways were adopted by the new world and are mainstream ways of life for many people in the Lowcountry. Foods, music, mannerisms and behaviors were all influences of what we now call the Charleston way.”
Deierlein replies, “I think the friendliness of the Charleston community came from the Gullah culture.” Murray then says, “The first thing I fell in love with was the language, I thought it was so amazing that their special language was maintained until the 21st century. When Africans were brought to the Carolinas for the rice plantations, they brought with them their culture. This includes their clothes, languages, and also their foods. At first, the cooking of foods was done with seasonings from Africa.”
Murray then concludes the episode saying, “When I first meet the Gullah people out in Wadmalaw Island, I learned of their importance of being self sufficient. They didn’t have a bridge to get to the urban part of the city until the 1950s, so they had to learn how to make do with what they had because they were isolated.”
My Positive Perspective is a media outlet believing that improvement in our community will be best achieved by focusing on the good things happening in our world today. Having survived a near fatal car accident as a youth, a shift of perception forced one to have a mentality of always concentrating on the brighter sides of things. This was true, and in my book, Return From a Comatose Mind, this belief was put to the test. Appreciation for life was the biggest thing one took away from my brush with death, and it is because of that gives me such a huge desire to be helpful to many. My Positive Perspective is a way of overcoming challenges through positive thinking.
