New Memoir Chronicles a Woman's Journey of Self-Discovery and Empowerment During the Sexual Revolution
Creative writer and activist is ready to share her story of becoming a woman with a voice
NEW YORK, May 1, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- From her early years grappling with confusing feelings and societal expectations to her eventual awakening and liberation, author Nancy Chan is ready to share her story of becoming a woman with a voice while finding herself during a cultural revolution in her new memoir, "A Funny Thing Called Love."
Chan, born a decade before the sexual revolution in the 1960's, was stuck in a world that centered on her parents and was encouraged not to speak up. As a child, she experienced the silent influence of patriarchy, gender discrimination, and class division, and decided to rebel by exploring her sexuality.
As she grew older, she reached her spiritual awakening when committing to "the talking cure," a therapy made famous by Sigmund Freud, and using the philosophy of C. Wright Mills, leading to the claim that an individual cannot understand themselves unless they examine the society in which they live in.
"In Buddhist terms, I was presented with my koan," Chan said. "If I was so smart, why did I feel so helpless? It wasn't until I became older and met someone in my life who saw me for who I am and gave me the guidance needed to succeed.
In addition, Chan shares her experiences navigating relationships and intimacy, ultimately learning to celebrate and honor her authentic self. By sharing her story, she encourages readers to believe in themselves, be confident to ask questions, and demand the love they deserve.
"When you grow up in darkness, only you can believe in yourself," Chan said. "As a society, we need community. Somebody must tell you that you're smart and that you're doing the right thing, only then will life begin to make sense."
