Oaks Christian Graduate Becomes Oaks Christian Online High School Advanced Placement English Literature Teacher
Westlake Village, CA (PRWEB) June 05, 2014 -- Chelsea Helena, formerly Chelsea McGrath, graduated in the top 10 from Oaks Christian School in 2007. After graduating Summa Cum Laude with a degree in English Literature from Pepperdine University and teaching for Teach for America, Chelsea is returning to her alma mater, albeit remotely, to teach her first passion: English Literature. Chelsea started teaching with 4th and 5th grade students at R.N. Fickett Elementary School in Atlanta, GA. Her original plan was to pursue educational advocacy or law after college, but she decided to get to know the students she would be advocating for first. She says, “The students at Fickett face some challenges, but the school is very supportive, and has a genuine love for their kids.” After completing her two-years of service with Teach for America, Chelsea stayed on at Fickett and became involved in ethics advocacy and literacy initiatives.
Chelsea is now returning to Oaks Christian part-time as an online Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition teacher. The AP online class was written by Oaks Christian to match the content and rigor of its main campus class. With her degree in literature, Master of Arts in Teaching, and unique background of learning from Oaks’ teachers, Chelsea is a complement to the UC-and-College-Board-approved course. Chelsea says, “Although I fell in love with the community at Fickett, I miss reading and writing about great literature with older students. Teaching this online high school course will allow me to get in touch with that part of who I am as a human being.” Chelsea also appreciated the many opportunities Oaks Christian afforded her and is eager to give back: “I use Oaks Christian as a standard of rigor in my classroom. I know what good education looks like and what a student is entitled to, and that helps me advocate specifically for my elementary students and the resources they need to succeed.” The online, college-preparatory high school students at Oaks Christian Online high school are equally blessed to have Chelsea use her gifts and talents for their benefit, and are excited about her teaching in the coming fall semester.
The main campus of Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village, CA, opened in the fall of 2000, and Oaks Christian Online School (OCO) opened for full-time, online students in the fall of 2011.
