Ocean Otolaryngology Combats Chronic Sinusitis with New Device
Toms River, NJ (PRWEB) September 05, 2016 -- Sufferers of chronic sinusitis are turning to Ocean Otolaryngology for new methods for long-term relief. The Ocean County-based practice now offers the Propel® implant, a new medical device that is clinically proven to improve outcomes for sinus surgery.
“The Propel® implant is a game changer for our patients who suffer from chronic sinusitis in combination with nasal polyps,” said Dr. Bruce W. Peters, a board certified Otolaryngolgist, Head and Neck Surgeon at Ocean Otolaryngology. “The device reduces the re-growth of polyps post-surgery and the need for oral steroids.”
Chronic sinusitis affects one in seven adults according to a 2010 National Health Interview Survey. The condition, which is characterized by chronic congestion, postnasal drainage, pressure, coughing and headaches, is commonly underdiagnosed as allergies. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, 49% of sinusitis sufferers have never seen an ear, nose and throat specialist about their condition.
Those diagnosed with the condition initially turn to antibiotics, inhaled nasal topical steroids, antihistamines and decongestants. Reports by the Millenium Research Group indicate that 500,000 sufferers who don’t respond to medical treatment undergo endoscopic surgery to remedy their condition.
Donna W., patient at Ocean Otolaryngology, opted for the Propel® implant after suffering from chronic sinusitis. “I had so many sinus infections, and since receiving the implant in July, they’ve cleared up,” said Donna. “I had a very good experience at Ocean Otolaryngology and would encourage anyone considering the Propel® implant to receive it there.”
The Propel® implant can be inserted in conjunction with endoscopic surgery using a disposable introducer. After insertion, the spring-loaded device expands to maintain its position in the operative site and eludes steroids that are locally absorbed by the sinus tissue. The procedure includes the removal of inflamed tissue, requires no external incisions and can be done under local anesthesia if not done in conjunction with endoscopic surgery.
“The surgery is relatively quick and pain-free,” said Dr. Peters. “The Propel® implant often allows patients to avoid the need for oral steroids and their associated side effects. The device dissolves over four to six weeks, while continually delivering medication to the local tissues to help prevent polyp recurrence.”
All three doctors at Ocean Otolaryngology, including Dr. Peters and his associates Dr. Christina M. Gillepsie and Dr. Stephen B. Kupferberg, can assist patients seeking to combat chronic sinusitis with this new device. “We encourage those who believe they may be suffering from chronic sinusitis to visit our offices to discuss whether endoscopic surgery and the Propel® implant could help alleviate their symptoms,” said Dr. Peters.
