Paradigm to Offer Phone Counseling Over Spring Break for Teens
Malibu, California (PRWEB) April 01, 2014 -- Paradigm Malibu plans to offer phone counseling with the help of extra counselors through April and Spring Break sessions. During times such as this, families often struggle with teen eating disorders, teen substance abuse, body image issues, and more, thanks to pool parties and beach trips.
"Teens struggle with these issues on a daily basis, yet problems seem to arise more frequently during Spring Break. This may be due to the teen having more time on his or her hands, or it may be due to the fact that pool and beach trips leave the body more exposed, increasing body image issues such as teen body dysmorphic disorder. No matter where the problem lies, the counselors at Paradigm Malibu work to address the current issue and any underlying core ones," Cole Rucker of Paradigm Malibu explains.
Teen eating disorders encompass many mental health conditions. Ones many are familiar with include Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, an binge eating disorder, yet these conditions are often missed as they are hard to recognize and diagnose. Teens usually try to hide the problem from parents and symptoms frequently occur with other disorders, further complicating diagnosis and treatment.
"When one realizes their teen has an eating disorder, help must be sought immediately. Even those who have been undergoing treatment, however, may relapse during Spring Break, and parents must be aware of this to seek help right away if an issue does arise," Rucker continues.
Caricatures entertain individuals by taking their most prominent feature and exaggerating it. Sadly, teen body dysmorphic disorder is similar in many ways in that the teen believes one or more of their features is deformed or exceptionally ugly, when this feature is completely normal in every way. According to Rucker, the teen becomes so obsessed with their conception of their body, they begin pulling away from other people and avoiding social situations, as they believe no one can bear to look at them. Treatment is needed to help the teen deal with any feeling of disgust or inadequacy resulting from this condition, and the extra counselors in place over Spring Break are more than happy to help.
Substance abuse issues also come in many forms and interfere with the teen's responsibilities or functioning. With more free time on their hands, kids often find themselves in trouble over Spring Break. "Parents who suspect a problem has arisen during the break from normal activities need to call for help immediately. Paradigm Malibu recognizes the significance of Spring Break and the accompanying rise of mental health issues and has prepared for this situation by bringing in extra counselors for free phone counseling. Don't delay. Help the child get back on track today with Paradigm counselors. Doing so helps the child survive a challenging time in their life," Rucker declares.
