Popular Model Angie Everhart Undergoes Thyroidectomy After Thyroid Cancer Diagnosis
Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) August 08, 2013 -- On May 13th, 2013, ABCNews.com announced that 43 year old model and actress Angie Everhart had received a diagnosis of thyroid cancer and would undergo a thyroidectomy to remove the gland immediately. As a world-renowned thyroid surgeon and Director of the CENTER for Advanced Head & Neck Surgery in Los Angeles, Babak Larian, MD, FACS, says that the condition is very treatable when the cancer is detected early.
“Though it’s never good to receive a diagnosis of cancer, in Ms. Everhart’s case, it’s great that her doctors are taking immediate action and removing her thyroid gland as well as the cancer. This will improve her chances of success, and also limits the possibility of the cancer spreading to other organs,” said Dr. Larian, expert thyroid surgeon.
A thyroidectomy is a procedure in which an experienced head and neck surgeon will remove a portion of or the entire thyroid gland affected with cancer. During this surgery, surgeons make an incision near the base of the neck that can range in size, but is most likely around two inches. Though a thyroidectomy is typically safe and effective, Dr. Larian attempts to perform a minimally invasive version of the surgery whenever possible for his patients in Los Angeles.
“A traditional thyroidectomy like the one Ms. Everhart received is effective for the removal of a thyroid gland affected with cancer. However, most patients are also candidates for a minimally invasive thyroidectomy, which uses the help of an endoscope and has a much smaller incision. These patients also tend to recover faster from their procedure and can return home after waking up,” said Dr. Larian.
As Dr. Larian states, one of the most effective ways to overcome thyroid cancer is to be adamant about receiving proper medical attention from an experienced doctor. Those who have a family history of thyroid cancer or suspect they may be suffering from a different thyroid condition, including hypothyroidism, a thyroid nodule or a thyroid tumor, are encouraged to be checked out.
“Thyroid conditions are very common in America. Right now we’re seeing more than 50,000 new cases of thyroid cancer each year, and nearly 4.6 percent of the population has hypothyroidism. It’s very important to seek the help of a medical professional as soon as possible if you believe you’re having a problem with yourthyroid,” said Dr. Larian.
