Prescription Pain Meds Now #1 Killer of Teens in the US
Malibu, CA (PRWEB) December 10, 2013 -- In a November 20th article in the Huffington Post, blogger Jamison Monroe Jr. reported statistics from several studies, citing what many Americans are all too aware of: prescription medication is a serious health crisis, especially for young people.
From 2000 – 2009, teen fatalities by prescription medication jumped 91%, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control(1). That same report revealed that prescription drug use takes a life in the US every 19 minutes.
A 2011 report released by the White House(2) states that roughly 70% of the medication that teens take come from their own homes. That report details some of the efforts thus far to curtail prescription drug misuse, such as monitoring and tracking via centralized computer records. Proper disposal of prescription drugs was also highlighted as a means to help thin the available supply of unused medication remaining in circulation.
Parents bear as much responsibility as young people do in this epidemic as data shows that only 14% of adults warn their children about the dangers of misusing prescription medication. That figure is contrasted with the 81% of parents who reported that they had spoken to their kids about the risks of marijuana(3).
“We understand that prescription medication, under the certain circumstances, can become difficult to safely manage,” said Pax Prentiss, CEO of Passages Addiction Treatment Centers. “The doors at Passages remain open for anyone who is ready to take back their life.”
At Passages Malibu - Addiction Ends Here™
About Passages Malibu & Passages Ventura:
Father and son team Chris and Pax Prentiss founded Passages Malibu in 2001. Its second location, Passages Ventura, first opened its doors in 2009. The two drug, alcohol, and prescription medication abuse treatment centers offer an alternative to the 12 step/AA model of addiction treatment by utilizing a holistic program that focuses on the underlying issues of substance dependency, rather than attributing addiction to an incurable disease.
Both Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura accept insurance and each have earned the coveted Joint Commission (JCAHO) accreditation, which has only been given to 6% of the nation’s behavioral health treatment programs.
Passages Malibu was named the #1 treatment center in the world by Healthcare Global, one of the "Most Luxurious Places to Dry Out" by Forbes magazine, and the Huffington Post recently acknowledged Passages as a center that “caters to a high-end crowd, with many CEOs, entrepreneurs and high-powered professionals among its clients.”
The co-founders are also authors of an acclaimed series of addiction treatment books, including their groundbreaking, flagship title, The Alcohollism and Addiction Cure.
