San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 07, 2014 -- Proof School, the brainchild of nationally-recognized and award-winning mathematicians and educators, has responded to the call from students and parents for a more advanced, creative and inquiry-based secondary school mathematics and computer science curriculum.
Starting in the fall of 2015, Proof School will welcome talented students in grades 7-12 who are passionately focused on math. As Dean of Mathematical Sciences, Dr. Sam Vandervelde of St. Lawrence University will be charged with leading the school’s culture and exceptional math and computer science program.
Dr. Vandervelde is a creative and charismatic mathematician who has led a distinguished and influential career as a college professor and high school teacher, winning national teaching awards at both levels. He earned his PhD in Mathematics at University of Chicago.
“We are excited and grateful to have Dr. Vandervelde develop the math and computer science curriculum for Proof School. He has over twenty years of experience working with middle and high school students in math circles, camps and competitions,” says Proof School co-founder and Chair of the Mathematics Department at University of San Francisco, Dr. Paul Zeitz. “Dr. Vandervelde is one of the nation’s best teachers of mathematics at any level.”
"Proof School is the logical next step to supporting kids who have discovered the beauty of mathematics and the joy of problem solving, for instance through participation in math circles, online courses, or math festivals," explains Dr. Vandervelde. "Proof School will immerse students in an environment of mathematical inquiry and computer programming, in the company of intellectual peers and excellent teachers who are themselves active in the mathematical sciences."
Parents and students are invited to meet Dr. Vandervelde for Q&A and interactive math talks. Dr. Paul Zeitz, Chair of the Mathematics Department at University of San Francisco, former coach of the USA International Mathematical Olympiad team, a founder of the San Francisco Math Circle, and a founder of Proof School, will also be in attendance.
You can meet Proof School’s Dean of Mathematical Sciences at this year’s Bay Area Mathematical Olympiad (BAMO) awards ceremony Sunday, March 9, from 11:00am-2:00pm at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) in Berkeley.
Dr. David Eisenbud, Director of MSRI, is a Proof School advisory board member. “Science can flourish only if the most engaged and talented students can get the enrichment they need,” Eisenbud says. “Proof School will offer such students--kids who truly love math--that rich education.”
Dr. Vandervelde’s vision for Proof School will also be discussed on the following dates and at the following venues:
Saturday, March 8, 2:00pm-3:30pm: Stanford Math Circle (Stanford’s Building 380, Sloan Hall, room 380C)
Sunday, March 9, 11:00am-2:00pm: Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI-Berkeley)
Sunday, March 9, 5:00pm-6:15pm: San Francisco Math Circle (SF State, Center for Science and Mathematics Education, Trailer P)
Monday, March 10, 12:30pm-2:00pm: University of San Francisco, downtown campus (101 Howard St, Room 529)
Monday, March 10, 6:30pm-8:00pm: Marin Math Circle (Dominican University of San Rafael, Guzman Lecture Hall)
Tuesday, March 11, 6:15pm-7:45pm: Berkeley Math Circle (UC Berkeley‘s Evans Hall, room 1015)
About Proof School
Proof School is a new middle and high school for kids who love the mathematical sciences, scheduled to open in fall 2015 in downtown San Francisco. We will be launching our community outreach center and think tank, Proof School Incubator (PSI), in fall 2014.
Proof School will offer an unrivaled education to kids who intensely enjoy and excel at mathematics while providing a complete humanities, arts, and physical sciences curriculum. Proof School students will thrive in an environment of academic rigor, respect, and fellowship. They will explore all subjects through creative inquiry, collaborative partnerships and real-world work.
