San Francisco Amateur Astronomers Club Invites Public to View Total Lunar Eclipse on September 27, 2015
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 17, 2015 -- The San Francisco Amateur Astronomers (SFAA), based in San Francisco, California, announces an event for the general public to watch the upcoming Total Lunar Eclipse. The viewing party commences at 6:30 pm Sunday September 27th, with the eclipse reaching totality at 7:13 PM. Viewing will take place at Pier 15 in San Francisco adjacent to the Exploratorium, where SFAA members will provide telescopes for viewing the spectacle.
The public viewing takes advantage of the open views of the San Francisco Bay at Pier 15, as the eclipsed Moon will be rising due east across the water. The club members will set up telescopes along the public walkway just behind the Exploratorium. Starting at 6:30 pm, totality is reached from 7:13 pm until 8:22 pm, and the event concludes at 9:00 pm as the Moon gradually exits the Partial Eclipse phase. The event is free-of-charge and is appropriate for all ages.
The September 27th Total Lunar Eclipse is the final in a series of four consecutive total lunar eclipses in 2014 and 2015, an uncommon occurrence. On September 27th the Moon will be fully eclipsed for over an hour, and the view should be quite spectacular including shades of red, orange and grey across the darkened face of the Moon.
“San Francisco has a science-friendly populace that enjoys learning and participating in big science,” said SFAA President Douglas Smith. “Our club members are happy to set up telescopes to give people a chance to learn about the wonders of the night sky. An eclipse is a particularly popular celestial event that brings many people out to view.”

Visitors are reminded to wear warm clothing, as the evening weather conditions on the San Francisco Bay can be quite chilly. The event is subject to cancellation due to inclement weather.
