The New Design Project LLC Completes Two New York Residential Renovation Projects
Brooklyn, New York (PRWEB) May 07, 2014 -- The New Design Project LLC, a Brooklyn based interior design practice run by former bankers, has recently completed the renovation of two single-family residential units in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan. For both projects, the emphasis was on delivering an impactful transformation of the space, in the most economical manner possible.
For the first renovation, The New Design Project was mandated by parent company The New Project Group LLC, a New York based owner-operator of individually designed furnished rental apartments, to transform a recently acquired unit on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. “The apartment was dark, claustrophobic, and had not been updated for over 25 years, but we saw the potential,” explains James Davison, Managing Partner of The New Project Group. “Since this is a business, every cent counts, so the brief to our designers was to create a beautiful, functioning space, as cost-effectively as possible.”
“Removing a dividing wall between the kitchen and living room allowed light to flood in, while the choice of a monochrome palette throughout injected a new warmth into the space,” explains Fanny Abbes, Creative Director of The New Design Project. “Costs were kept low by imaginatively repurposing items such as electric cable reels into low stools. We believe that great design has more to do with creativity and imagination, than it does a large budget. There’s not a single piece of furnishing in the unit that cost more than $500,” she proudly adds.
For the second renovation, The New Design Project was approached by a young professional couple looking to inject some urban charm into a bland, poorly laid-out apartment in the Cherokee Building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. “To improve the footprint, we moved the galley-kitchen along the back wall of the open living area, and then created an accent with blue cabinets, a walnut countertop and a hexagon concrete tile backsplash,” says Fanny Abbes. “Architectural interest was created by exposing the brick wall in the living room and retaining the old metal plaster supports. Our clients did not have a big budget, so we had to be creative in furnishing the space either with second hand pieces or things found in the street. The coffee table in the living room is an old repurposed window frame, and the side-tables in the bedroom are made out of concrete blocks,” she explains.
