WASHINGTON (PRWEB) January 18, 2018 -- UNCF will host the DC Mayor’s Masked Ball on January 27 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill beginning at 6 p.m. Benefiting historically black colleges and universities, UNCF aims to change the narrative of HBCUs across the nation by equipping minority students with the resources necessary to transition into college and ultimately the workforce. More than 500 will attend the signature fundraising event, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, MASKED award honorees Ben Wilson, chairman, Beveridge & Diamond; Bishop James L. Davis, 2nd Episcopal District of the AME Church and the DMV’s business, civic and education leaders that support UNCF’s work, thus showing the positive impact of HBCUs on the economy.
“Events such as the DC Mayor’s Masked Ball stress the importance of HBCUs,” said Michael L. Lomax, president and CEO of UNCF. “HBCUs not only provide a college education for 300,000 students every year, but they are a powerful economic engine: locally, through the jobs they create and the expenditures they make in the cities where they are located, and nationally, through the students they educate and prepare for an information-age workforce.”
With the help of the DMV community, $1.4 million was awarded last year in scholarships and programs to over 106 area scholars. And now, with the release of UNCF’s new publication, HBCUs Make America Strong: The Positive Economic Impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, we know graduates from the 11 HBCUs in the DMV contributed over $3 billion to the total economic impact, generated 29,848 in total jobs and produced $26.3 billion in lifetime earnings.
The UNCF Washington Mayor’s Masked Ball is chaired by David Trone, owner, Total Wine and More; sponsors include Vonage, Exelon, JMA Solutions, DC09, Pepco Holdings and many others.
The program will also include a VIP reception, live and silent auction, elegant dining and entertainment provided by CeCe Peniston.
