Wendy Varble’s New Young Adult Novel Brings Depression-era Southern California to Life
Simi Valley, CA (PRWEB) November 19, 2013 -- A boy and his friends unwittingly become entangled in an adult world filled with secrets, confusion and deceit in Wendy Varble’s new young adult thriller, “The Pisgah Grande 1936” (published by Archway Publishing).
Set in Southern California circa 1936, “The Pisgah Grande 1936” follows the adventures of 8-year-old Johnny and three of his friends, each with very unique personalities. On Halloween night, the boys embark on an innocent adventure to explore a small, abandoned village in the Santa Susana Mountains known as the Pisgah Grande. When night falls, they experience a terrifying encounter that transforms their exciting adventure into dark mystery that begs to be solved. The book follows their efforts to solve the mystery and highlights the harsh realities of Depression-era life.
Varble believes that her book will resonate with today’s readers. “The sharp contrast between society today and that of the era described in the book is revelatory for today’s young contemporary reader and makes a strong case for the positive effects of strong family and community ties, a strong work ethic and a determination to see a task through to the very end.”
