"Oakland's Neighbor" Seneca Scott Announces Run for Mayor
Oakland's own Seneca Scott will be making his Mayoral announcement at 11 am on Mon., Feb. 14th, 2022, at the Bruce Beasley Sculpture Center in West Oakland. "We have to be honest with ourselves that we are in a very serious crisis," says Seneca.
OAKLAND, Calif., Feb. 10, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Seneca Scott, executive director of Neighbors Together Oakland, co-founder of Oakhella and Bottoms Up Community Gardens, has announced his candidacy for Oakland Mayor. Seneca believes in the power of Oakland neighbors working together to improve our City and that he has the integrity, solutions, and accountability to lead Oakland.
"We have to be honest with ourselves that we are in a very serious crisis," says Seneca.
Seneca plans to amend the City Charter to make Oakland's Mayor more accountable by adding the ability to veto legislation and the responsibility of running the City by carrying out the executive functions of the government to include the hiring and firing of department heads. Oakland deserves an accountable mayor who can execute solutionary measures to citywide problems. Without clearer authority, the mayor is unable to fulfill those expectations.
The lack of accessible housing remains a fundamental contributor to the homelessness and encampment crisis. It's cruel and unfair to our unhoused neighbors to allow them to live in squalor. It's time for them to get the help they desperately need. Seneca will help end our homeless encampment crisis by implementing the Encampment Management Policy.
"There are burned-out cars and trash is everywhere. There is massive human suffering, and our neighbors are not just terrified, but also ashamed to walk down the streets that they know and love. Our small businesses have been robbed mercilessly, especially those in the cannabis sector. We are losing economic opportunities and prosperity because we can't keep our streets safe." Seneca says he will decrease crime by increasing OPD resources, training, and staffing. He will safely implement MACRO and end the Negotiated Settlement Agreement (NSA), challenging it in court if necessary.
Seneca will institute a zero-tolerance policy with vehicle forfeiture and stiff fines penalties for illegal dumpers. He will remove City's abandoned vehicles that are causing significant harm to the environment. He will also increase the ability for neighbors to dump their trash safely by decreasing dump fees and increasing awareness about free bulk pickup.
Seneca is most excited about his plan to create a Department of Agriculture in Oakland dedicated to increasing agricultural identity and viability. Dramatic inflations and supply chain disruptions have made growing food locally a necessity for a healthy community. "With thousands of acres and a willing partner in the State, County, and local developers, we can reinvent our City to be more sustainable. Growing food brings Neighbors Together; let's do more of what works," says Seneca.
Seneca invites you to be a part of his campaign. Please join him for his Mayoral announcement at 11 am on Mon., Feb. 14, 2022, at the Bruce Beasley Sculpture Center (located at 323 Lewis Street -- 3rd St) in West Oakland. The event will also be live-streamed to Facebook for those unable to attend.
