Automatic Emergency Braking is poised to drastically reduce truck crash deaths and injuries. The need has never been greater and today, the Truck Safety Coalition announces a campaign to make sure they are used to their fullest life-saving potential.
WASHINGTON, April 24, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Truck Safety Coalition (TSC), a nonprofit fighting for safer commercial trucking nationwide, has launched the "Brakes for Life's Sake" Campaign. In honor of the late Sarah Debbink Langenkamp, the new campaign seeks to raise funds, save lives, and reduce injuries from commercial truck crashes.
Automatic Emergency Brakes (AEB) is a life-saving technology proven to significantly prevent or reduce the severity of crashes in all commercial motor vehicles. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) research indicates this low-cost technology can reduce front-to-rear crashes by 41% in heavy-duty trucks, and additional research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates that 56% of these crashes could be averted or their severity reduced in medium-duty trucks. Additionally, with 60% of all large truck fatalities occurring in crashes where the initial impact is the front of the truck, AEB is poised to make an outsized impact in reducing truck crash deaths and injuries.
Daniel Langenkamp, who lost his wife Sarah in a preventable truck crash, urges the public to act. "The Truck Safety Coalition is the real deal. Please help them. I will match the first $30K donated to this campaign and together we will save thousands of lives."
TSC Executive Director, Zach Cahalan stressed the urgency of the situation, "The need has never been greater. Large truck crash deaths are forecast to exceed 6,000 this past year, representing an 83% increase since 2009. This is intolerable, especially when solutions are available to turn the tide."
