Recent release "Leroy Smith: 20th Century Impresario of Denver's Five Points District" from Page Publishing author LeRoy O. Smith is a personal memoir in tribute to the life of a black man who was ahead of his time.
DENVER, Feb. 4, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- LeRoy O. Smith, an author with careers in both international educational development and in waging peace in the United States diplomatic service, has completed his new book "Leroy Smith: 20th Century Impresario of Denver's Five Points District": a family memoir.
Smith wrote, Leroy was the "cool cat" who introduced "race music" to the region. Through his patronage and promotion as a bandleader, Rhythm Record and Sporting Goods Shop owner, and "Rockin' with Leroy" late night radio disc jockey, he brought nationally known performers to fill dance and concert venues in Colorado and neighboring states. "Wild" Bill Moore and Aretha Franklin, among others, were inspired by his wide-ranging vision and love of hot and cool music.
Leroy—a fervent sportsman—was Colorado's first black man licensed to sell arms and ammunition alongside his fishing, camping, and sports gear. His "team" of baseball brothers challenged visiting Satchel Paige's players, and his women's bowling team touted his Colorado Negro Voters Club nightspot. As a dedicated Shriner, he fought City Hall and ingeniously "desegregated" Denver's major hotels.
Published by Page Publishing, LeRoy O. Smith's compelling saga shares his father's accomplishments in a thriving community that looked to him as a titular "Mayor."
