PROVIDENCE, R.I. (PRWEB) July 25, 2017 -- Inspired by her family story, Sylvia Brown wrote “Grappling with Legacy: Rhode Island’s Brown Family and the American Philanthropic Impulse” (published by Archway Publishing), which shares the history of philanthropic endeavors in America as mirrored by the Brown family of Rhode Island.
Set against the backdrop of Rhode Island, the family saga tells a story of philanthropic impulse. Wondering if it is self-interest, a feeling of guilt or a sense of genuine altruism, Brown delved into her extensive family archive to understand what fuels a multi-generational compulsion to giving in her family. She posits that the Brown family mirrors America’s evolving urge to do good – from colonial-era charity, to reformist initiatives in the Early Republic, to the philanthropy of the Gilded Age, to social impact investing today.
“Very few families can look back over eleven generations to analyze trends and the evolution of attitudes,” Brown says. “No other Ivy League university founded in the 18th century has a family still associated with it today.”
