Miami VA Healthcare System Named as “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality"
MIAMI (PRWEB) July 11, 2013 -- The Miami VA Healthcare System has been recognized as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” in the Healthcare Equality Index 2013, an annual survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organization. The Miami VA earned top marks for its commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families, who can face significant challenges in securing adequate healthcare.
“I’m proud to say that all Veterans are welcome at the Miami VA Healthcare System and that it is an honor to serve the men and women who have fought for our freedoms, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” said Paul Russo, Director of the Miami VA Healthcare System.
Providing care to Veterans goes beyond orientation, said Dr. Aitala Giron, TITLE. “These Veterans served our country and their sexual orientation or gender shouldn’t matter when it comes to healthcare. I’m proud that the Miami VA is being recognized for our longstanding commitment to treating all Veterans equally.”
The Miami VA Healthcare System was one of a select group of 464 healthcare facilities nationwide to be named Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality. Facilities awarded this title meet key criteria for equitable care, including non-discrimination policies for LGBT patients and employees, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for key staff members.
“LGBT patients deeply appreciate the welcoming environment provided by a Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality,” said Shane Snowdon, HRC Health & Aging Director. “It makes a big difference to know that your local healthcare facility is fully committed to giving you the same care it gives your neighbors and co-workers.”
