MARIETTA, Ga., Dec. 7, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- RoundTable Trading and others are encouraging thousands to participate in #FreeCoinDay And #Coins4Christmas. Why are hundreds of coin dealers and thousands of collectors being encouraged to give away rare and collectible coins this holiday season? Dealers from across the country are getting into the Christmas spirit by dropping silver dollars and gold coins into Salvation Army buckets this December and by marking Saturday, December 18, as Free Coin Day.
In the midst of a nationwide coin shortage, a coin collecting association is once again taking the nation by storm. Founding the Great American Coin Hunt in 2019, which inspired collectors and dealers to dump over one million collectible coins into circulation, RoundTable Trading has now created a brand new program this holiday season.
This new program is a spin off of the Great American Coin Hunt and has been dubbed the most broad reaching philanthropic campaign in numismatic history. Rob Oberth of RoundTable Trading is encouraging hundreds of coin dealers and thousands of coin collectors to give away rare and collectible coins for the inaugural #Coins4Christmas week and #FreeCoinDay.
This inaugural event will kick of Monday, December 13, 2021, ending in the grand finale on "Free Coin Day" Saturday, December 18, 2021.
Collectors nationwide are being encouraged to participate in Coins4Christmas in a few different ways.
- By leaving rare and collectible coins as tips, in public places and gifting them to unsuspecting strangers in places like malls and grocery stores.
- By wrapping rare coins like silver dollars in a note and dropping them in Salvation Army buckets.
- Finally by encouraging family and friends to use rare coins as stocking stuffers this year.
- This program will come to it's grand finale on Saturday, December 18 when hundreds of coin shops across America are projected to give away free collectible coins on Free Coin Day.
The Gold & Coin Exchange in Marietta, GA anticipates giving away hundreds of rare coins on Saturday, December 18. They plan to give away everything from antique large cents from the 1800's to modern day silver eagles like in the image below.
"We are very much looking forward to celebrating the numismatic hobby with our Cobb County community," says Jake Schlachter, of the Gold & Coin Exchange. "We will be hosting a contest of sorts, five lucky winners will receive a 2021 silver eagle on that day, additionally, every patron that comes into the shop on that Saturday will be entered into a drawing to win a free gold bar, we will also be dropping a rare gold Indian coin in a Salvation Army bucket during #Coins4Christmas week.'
The goal is to inspire a new generation of coin collectors to participate in a hobby that has many rewarding attributes.
"We settled on a date, just a few weeks ago when we were attending meetings in Colorado Springs and since then Rob has been manning the phones in order to reenergize the excitement that he stirred up in 2019 with the Great American Coin Hunt." CoinWeek editor and Free Coin Day co-founder Charles Morgan said. "I saw the good will that Rob and dealers across the country fostered with that event and thought what better way to contribute to the spirit of holiday giving than by promoting one day a year where coin shops give something special to members of their community to spark the excitement of collecting."
Many of the top numismatic organizations have pledged to help get the word out, including the American Numismatic Association and the Professional Numismatists Guild.
"Money is history you can hold in your hands. Every coin ever made has a story to tell about people, places, and events," said Robert Brueggeman, executive director of the prestigious Professional Numismatists Guild (http://www.PNGdealers.org). "Free Coin Day will help people learn about the historical, cultural, artistic, and economic importance of money as well as the enjoyment of collecting coins, paper money, tokens, and medals."
Oberth says "This is a completely different initiative than the coin hunt. The goal of the coin hunt was to encourage rare coins to be placed into circulation, essentially spending coins that were worth many multiples of their face value as regular change. This time, we intend to place these rare coins directly into the hands of the public. We are very excited to have initiated what has become a viral nationwide event."
Kim Kiick, Executive Director of the American Numismatic Association says. "So many of us are happy to share our pocket change at this time of year. What a great opportunity to also share interest in the art and history of coinage with our families, friends and communities!"
Those interested in participating are encouraged to post on social media using the hashtags #FreeCoinDay and #Coins4Christmas. They are also asked to contact their local coin shops and ask them to participate in this celebration of coins.
