NAIROBI, Kenya, July 23, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Since childhood all the way through his professional life, Edmund Barrow has always had a deep respect for the natural environment. From this interest in nature grew his interest in sacred trees and sacred groves. With it came his desire to bridge the world of religion and spirituality with the world of conservation and biodiversity. He explains and shares insights on these links between ecosystem management and human well-being in his book titled "Our Future in Nature: Trees, Spirituality, and Ecology" (published by Balboa Press).
"Wherever there are trees on planet Earth, there are sacred trees and often sacred groves. Sacred trees and sacred groves transcend race, nationality, color and creed. They often predate formal religion and the formal national park movement by hundreds and thousands of years," the author states. "This book explores why sacred trees and sacred groves are so widespread across the globe, and the reasons for their sacredness."
"Our Future in Nature: Trees, Spirituality, and Ecology" gives a global analysis of how important sacred trees and sacred groves are. It also demonstrates practical links as to what this means to custodians (elders, men and women, communities, spiritual groups and religions) across the globe. As the planet faces pressing challenges of environmental degradation, conversion and climate change, the book offers ways for those involved with religion, spirituality, conservation and land use to jointly engage in repairing the damage done to Earth.
With the book, Barrow invites readers to reconnect with nature, rediscover the healing and educational powers of nature and be at peace with the natural world in their increasingly stress-filled lives. About the Author
Edmund Barrow grew up on one of Ireland's first formal organic farms and was planting trees at the age of 6. This early practical experience has stayed with and helped him focus on community level knowledge, institutions, rights, responsibilities and governance, and learning from and with the rural people he has worked with. Barrow studied natural sciences in Trinity College Dublin and has a master's degree in drylands development from Antioch University. He has worked in more than 20 countries in Africa and globally for over 40 years. Barrow is currently a consultant in community-based natural resource management and governance. Prior to this, he was director of International Union for Conservation of Nature's Global Ecosystem Management Programme with responsibility for IUCN's global work on ecosystem- based adaptation and disaster risk reduction. He also helped develop IUCN's Red List of Ecosystems and work in Drylands. Barrow has extensive working experience with sustainable development in different ecosystems (drylands, forests, agriculture, pastoralism), with a lot of practical field experience at the local community and village levels. He has been involved in ecosystem (especially forest) restoration, participatory approaches to conservation (planning, implementation and learning) and governance (with respect to issues such as institutional choice, representation, action learning, power). He has published several books and over 40 journal articles.
