FORT MYERS, Fla., Feb. 7, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Germany had liberated nuclear energy years before America started work on the atomic bomb. So how did the U.S. avoid a Nazi Armageddon?
In "The Armageddon Secret: A Novel Inspired by Actual Events," author and forensic engineer Robert Burnham interweaves fact and fiction to give readers a potential explanation for how the world narrowly escaped nuclear destruction at the hands of Hitler, despite the Nazi's massive head start and well-known engineering prowess. The story centers around real and fictional members of the German anti-Nazi underground, Black Orchestra, and their heroic attempts to foil Hitler's prewar program to develop atomic weaponry.
In Burnham's new thriller, the widow of a murdered Black Orchestra member falls in love with an expat American journalist, and, together, they battle the SS, the Gestapo and their own inner demons, as they struggle to disrupt Hitler's atom bomb project.
"At the dawn of WWII, Nazi scientists were years ahead in the race for the atomic bomb," Burnham said, "but history is largely silent as to why Hitler's scientists failed to exploit this advantage."
Research for "The Armageddon Secret" spanned more than a decade and encompassed many locations, including Berlin, Munich, London, New York, the Institut du Radium in Paris, and the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Approximately 40 books were employed as references in Burnham's writing of the novel. His book has received praise from sources like Kirkus Reviews and Richard Rhodes, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "The Making of the Atomic Bomb."
"This story," Burnham said, "while fiction, provides a credible explanation, based on historical facts, as to what COULD have happened."
