SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 10, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- After a 30-day crowdfunding campaign, San Francisco filmmaker Maria Breaux has successfully raised $10,400 for production of her feature film "mockumentary" project, "Vulveeta," starring and created by Breaux, StormMiguel Florez, J Aguilar, Dakota Billops-Breaux, and Sarah Korda.
Breaux is also a recipient of a $15,000 San Francisco Arts Commission grant for the project. The funds will assist in the production of the micro-budget, improvised movie about a fictitious "riot grrrl" band from the 1990s.
Riot grrrl is having a moment—or more specifically, a resurgence. Reunions of bands like Bikini Kill, Team Dresch, and Sleater-Kinney are bringing the music and ethos to a whole new generation of avid fans—especially young women and girls. In addition, with continuing income inequality and a San Francisco that's changed dramatically since the first dot-com boom, the time is ripe for more and more projects that place marginalized communities front and center, and explore complex themes such as community and aging as an artist.
"This DIY comedy," said Breaux, "pokes fun at a range of things, hopefully some that aren't so obvious. What does it mean to try a bit too hard to 'self-actualize'? In what weird ways have we, as POC and LGBT individuals, confronted change? And, what's a 'scene,' anyway? Most importantly, this project is an homage to artists still living in the area, and the music and art that continues to fuel us."
Production of "Vulveeta" will take place in San Francisco and Oakland in October 2019.
