Florence "Floss" Turnbow celebrated her 103rd birthday on Saturday, Aug. 29, surrounded by family, friends and neighbors at Crescent Senior Living, the Sandy assisted living and memory care community she now calls home. Among the guests was Sandy Mayor Monica Zoltanski, who came to honor the city's oldest resident.
SANDY, Utah, Sept. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Florence "Floss" Turnbow celebrated her 103rd birthday on Saturday, Aug. 29, surrounded by family, friends and neighbors at Crescent Senior Living, the Sandy assisted living and memory care community she now calls home. Among the guests was Sandy Mayor Monica Zoltanski, who came to honor the city's oldest resident.
Asked for her secret to a long and healthy life, Floss offered advice as direct as the woman who gave it: "Just be good. Don't be bad. And work. You've gotta work."
The celebration reflected a lifetime spent making things for the people she loves. A seasoned quilter, Floss has stitched more than 6,000 quilts over the years. Several were displayed at the party, and her signature patterns inspired the custom cookies served to guests. Her great-nieces performed music in her honor, and three of her five sons and both of her twin daughters were on hand for the milestone.
Mayor Zoltanski presented Floss with an America 250 commemorative coin and pin along with a special gift. "You've been alive for more than a third of our country's history," the mayor told her, adding that residents like Floss are a reminder that Sandy "is more than our places or businesses. It's more about the people."

"She has 103 years of stories, a work ethic her family still talks about, and a gift for making people feel cared for. Born in 1923, Floss spent most of her life in the small Uintah Basin town of Tabiona, where she and her husband, Leo, raised their family. She was widowed in 1999 and moved to Sandy in recent years. Her children say her example still shapes the generations behind her. "She's given us such a good work ethic throughout our lives, and we're so blessed to have her still living," said daughter Marsha Harmon.
