Extra virgin olive oil is known mainly for its health benefits when consumed with food. However, olive oil can also be used for skin care. Carol Firenze, author of the Passionate Olive, shares some of the best ways to integrate olive oil into your beauty and skincare routine.

Olive oil is an effective ingredient for moisturizing. “Among all the natural lipids, Extra Virgin olive oil has the most similar chemical composition to human sebum,” says Firenze. Sebum is the skin’s own natural lubricant. Firenze adds, “Because of this, olive oil has exceptional penetrating ability, is easily absorbed and, with its cell “re-fattening” capacity, is a great moisturizer for all skin types.”

Firenze recommends trying olive oil for a hydrating mask for your hair. “I suggest an Extra Virgin olive oil conditioning treatment at least once a month. Olive oil penetrates the hair shaft, conditioning your hair. Massage ¼ cup of warm (not hot) olive oil into your hair; wait 10 minutes; then shampoo.”

Olive oil also makes a great exfoliator when mixed with other household ingredients, like salt and sugar. “One of my favorite uses of Extra Virgin olive oil is to exfoliate with an olive oil salt glow. Mix ½ cup extra virgin olive oil alone or in combination with a few drops of lavender or geranium oil, and 1 teaspoon (or more) of coarse sea salt.” Firenze suggests using sugar on the face and massaging it into the skin in a circular motion. This will leave skin soft and smooth.
