National Nuclear Security Administration Campus Receives LEED Gold Certification
Kansas City, Mo. (PRWEB) November 26, 2013 -- The National Nuclear Security Administration National Security Campus project has been awarded Leadership Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED is the nation’s preeminent certification program for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.
The project, located on the southern edge of Kansas City, Mo., demonstrates the growing trend of preserving the environment and creating sustainable structures. The 1.5 million square-foot, campus-style facility includes manufacturing, laboratory, warehouse and office space. Along with its LEED Gold certification, the campus project was the largest design-build project to date developed for the U.S. General Services Administration (on behalf of the NNSA), by CenterPoint Zimmer.
“HNTB is proud to support environmental sustainability efforts as part of our design process,” said Chris Migneron, HNTB Central Division architecture office leader. “This is yet another feature we’re able to offer our clients who participate in the ‘go green’ initiatives.”
LEED provides framework for a variety of projects that would like to achieve certification. It encourages building smarter rather than working harder. Projects earn points toward certification for things ranging from using sustainable design principles to low volatile organic compound paints. USGBC has continuously revised the program since its introduction in 2001. The requirements have gotten more extensive as the certification has become more popular.
