Neuro-Oncology Pioneer Who Defined Standard of Care for Brain and Spinal Tumors Joins Capital Institute for Neurosciences
Hopewell Township, NJ (PRWEB) December 04, 2013 -- Dr. Roy Patchell, an internationally known leader in neuro-oncology, has joined Capital Institute for Neurosciences as Director of Neuro-Oncology, further elevating the Institute as a national leader in the area of neurosciences.
Dr. Patchell’s research has been instrumental in defining the treatments used for patients with brain and spinal tumors. He joins Dr. Arlan Mintz, Director of Neurosurgical Oncology, as part of the Institute’s National Brain Tumor Center. The center combines their significant experience with advanced technology and dedicated neuroscience resources offered in one convenient location at Capital Health.

Dr. Patchell’s research has been described as ‘transformative,’ and in two groundbreaking studies on brain tumors, he established the standard of care for these patients. In one study, Dr. Patchell and his colleagues conclusively demonstrated the benefits of surgical intervention. In a second study, he demonstrated the benefits of post-operative radiation therapy.
Dr. Patchell has also defined the standard of care for treating spinal cord compression caused by cancer demonstrating that surgical intervention, followed by radiation, is more effective than radiation alone.
Dr. Patchell joined Capital Health from the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, where he was chairman of the Department of Neurology. Recognized as one of the top neurological institutes in the country, Dr. Patchell directed the institute’s Neurology Department, led its neuro-oncology program, and served on its Board of Directors. During his tenure, Dr. Patchell also oversaw the founding and opening of the Muhammad Ali Parkinson’s Center.

Prior to his tenure at Barrow, Dr. Patchell was the chief of Neuro-Oncology at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. He completed a neurology residency at Johns Hopkins University, a fellowship in neurology at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, and a fellowship in neuro-oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Often invited to lecture around the country and internationally, Dr. Patchell has published extensively, including papers in The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical Association, and The Lancet, among many others. Dr. Patchell has received substantial research funding from the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
