Jo A. Hannafin, MD, PhD, Installed as First Woman President of AOSSM
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) July 10, 2013 -- Jo A. Hannafin, MD, PhD will be installed as the 42nd and first woman president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) on Saturday, July 13th, 2013, during the Society’s Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL (July 11th-14th).
Jo A. Hannafin MD, PhD is currently an Attending Orthopedic Surgeon and Director of Orthopedic Research at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College. She is a clinician-scientist and has dedicated a significant amount of her professional life to basic and translational research in sports medicine. She is also board certified in orthopedic surgery/sports medicine.
Dr. Hannafin graduated from Brown University in 1977 and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (MD, PhD in Physiology and Biophysics) in 1985. She completed her residency training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and sports medicine fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery. She joined the Hospital for Special Surgery staff in 1992.
Dr. Hannafin was a United States Olympic Committee (USOC) physician for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece and the 2003 Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic. She is currently the Head Team Physician for the WNBA New York Liberty and has served as a Team Physician for the NY Mets and WUSA New York Power. She has been a Team Physician for the United States Rowing Team since 1994 and is a member of the FISA Medical Commission. She served as the FISA Medical Officer for the 2012 Olympic Games and has been Medical Officer for ten World Championship and World Cup rowing events.
Dr. Hannafin has participated in a wide range of activities for the AOSSM, including Vice President and Secretary of the AOSSM Board, Chair of the Enduring Education and Research Committees and has been an active member of numerous other committees. She also served as a member of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Board from 2006-2012 and currently serves as Vice President of the National Rowing Foundation. She has published more than 80 papers in peer-reviewed journals and served on the NIH SBSR study section from 2007-2011. In addition, Dr. Hannafin has received numerous awards, including:

• Orthopaedic Research Society, Women’s Leadership Forum Award
• Einstein-Montefiore, Orthopaedic Distinguished Alumnus Award
• City of New York Fire Department, Honorary Medical Officer
• Castle-Connolly Top Doctor annually since 1994
• Castle Connolly Physician of the Year Award for Clinical Excellence (2013)
