Women's Excellence in Midwifery Now Offering Preconception Health Visits in Lake Orion and Clarkston, Michigan
Clarkston, MI (PRWEB) August 30, 2013 -- Thinking about starting a family? Prevention is the best medicine. The Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs), Tracie Achrem and Chris Borowski, of Women's Excellence in Midwifery are now offering preconception visits for women who are considering pregnancy in the near future and want to get that pregnancy off to a healthy start. According to Tracie Achrem, "The goal of a preconception visit is to provide important information and treat any existing problems before pregnancy, thereby improving a woman’s health and reducing health risks to her future baby."
"A healthy pregnancy and baby starts before conception, since many women learn they are pregnant after the baby's internal organs have already started to form," says Borowski. Preconception education on healthy diet, avoidance of harmful substances, pregnancy-friendly medications, and harmful infections can make a difference and boost the chances of a healthy baby.
The CNMs of Women's Excellence in Midwifery will also identify health problems that can can pose a risk to having a healthy pregnancy. Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, seizures, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), phenylketouria (PKU), and kidney disease are maternal health problems that should be controlled or treated prior to pregnancy. A thorough patient/family medical history that screens for risk of birth defects, prematurity, and genetic disorders is also part of the preconception visit. A simple blood test at the time of the preconception visit will be done to test for immunity to diseases or infections, like chickenpox and rubella, that can cause birth defects and other complications during pregnancy.
In addition to preconception counseling, Achrem and Borowski also provide personalized gynecology, prenatal, antenatal and postnatal care. Both have labor and delivery privileges at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester, Michigan and are backed up by a great team of Women's Excellence OB/GYNs.
