Local National Black MBA Chapter Delivers Economic Impact for Members and Houston
Houston, TX (PRWEB) August 19, 2013 -- Since its inception 30 years ago, the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) Houston Chapter has consistently brought value to its members and the Houston economy. Over the years, it has awarded hundreds of youth scholarships, facilitated countless graduate management education programs and career opportunities, and hosted significant economics-driven events such as the upcoming 35th annual conference and exposition attracting thousands of attendees Sept. 10-14, 2013, to the George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida De Las Americas, Houston, TX 77010.
"NBMBAA is entirely focused on advancing its members and empowering youth to achieve a higher education, fulfill their dreams and be prepared to fill our shoes one day as civic leaders," said NBMBAA Houston President Darrell James. James took the helm as president of NBMBAA Houston chapter earlier this year to support the board’s goals to increase organizational awareness, stakeholder partnerships, memberships and development programs.
"I have been fortunate to follow many great leaders of the organization," said James. "The local chapter has been recognized by the National Black MBA Association as Chapter of the Year for eight of the past nine years. This strong foundation has made working to accomplish organizational goals fulfilling."
The chapter’s primary goals are to successfully operate several major programs and annual events, including: The Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) High School Mentoring Program, an Undergraduate and MBA Scholarship Program and associated fundraising events; and community outreach and membership development programs.
Contributing to the chapter’s success as Chapter of the Year has been management of its very successful LOT program. For more than a decade, this challenging program has had a stimulating influence on high school students. The primary objective of the program is to strengthen students’ leadership, academic, and interpersonal skills, which can provide the foundation for success in their personal and professional lives. The chapter has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships to Houston-area minority students.
Additionally, the Houston LOT team received national acclaim this summer taking second place among 19 teams in the June 21-23, 2013 LOT Business Case Competition at Bentley University in Massachusetts.
The Houston chapter is comprised of 400 active members representing all levels of business management in a number of industries such as finance, IT marketing, law, international business, healthcare, education and engineering. Accomplished entrepreneurs and small business owners are also increasingly joining the chapter. Members appreciate the personal and professional growth programs and the opportunity to impact communities locally, regionally and nationally.
Culminating its 30th anniversary, the local chapter will host more than 10,000 NBMBAA members representing 47 U.S. chapters for the 35th annual conference and exposition. The national conference is themed, "Courageous Leadership: Owning our Own Success" and is anticipated to make a significant impact on the Houston economy.
The conference schedule will focus on the confidence and integrity needed for organizations and executives to be distinguishable among their competition. An exhibit hall, job match, whiteboard competition, entrepreneurial institute and professional development programs highlight the event.
Attendees will be forever changed by the powerful keynote presentations of Rev. Dr. Al Sharpton, founder and president of the National Action Network and Robert L. Johnson, founder and chairman, OppsPlace LLC; as well as the more than 50 additional thought-leaders convening in Houston from across the nation.
