Every month, American Frame, a web-based custom framing and art printing company headquartered in Maumee, OH, features the work of an artist from their online art gallery on the home page of their website, http://www.americanframe.com.

One Way Alley

Bajema uses photographic and follow-up digital manipulation to create arresting images of architecture and the natural world near his home in Belligham, Washington. The featured piece is a combination of five photographs taken in rapid succession. The image captures the path a man takes walking past, in Bajema’s words, “aging urban architecture,” and showcases one of the photographer’s favorite techniques: selectively removing all color in an image but one. “I was intrigued by the textures and details of the back alley,” Bajema says, “and the walker adds a sense of motion to an otherwise still life.”

The frame treatment continues Bajema’s arresting color scheme, with a dominant moody-gray mat punctuated by slim reveals of two other mats in red and white and a red metal moulding from American Frame’s Twilight collection. The frame’s slight proportions don’t overwhelm the piece as a wider face might while the metal subtly mirrors the industrial materials in the image itself.
