New York, NY (PRWEB) August 27, 2013 -- The American Institute of Architects New York Chapter and the Center for Architecture have announced new and expanded programs for the third annual edition of Archtober, the official New York City Architecture and Design Month. Record attendance and involvement are projected for the growing festival, with more than 150 curated programs. The full calendar of offerings is available at http://www.archtober.org/calendar.

Taking place during October, the annual month-long festival of architecture includes films, lectures, family activities, programs, exhibitions and more. “The many participating organizations aim to raise awareness of the important role of design in our city and globally,” says Jill N. Lerner, FAIA, 2013 president of AIA New York and principal of architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. “Building on the first two years, Archtober 2013 will shine a spotlight on what makes New York great: its unparalleled architecture, outstanding design professionals, and global influence.”

With 31 days of events, tours and exhibits in more than 50 venues, Archtober includes programs at the Center for Architecture, including a new exhibition opening October 1 on American architects behind the biggest building projects in Asia, called Practical Utopias. Other city institutions hosting major Archtober programs include the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Arts and Design, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92, a fledgling cultural venue.

NYC & Company’s Design Collection group of hotels will serve this year for the first time as the official hotels of Archtober. The 18 boutique hotels located around New York City, along with the Official NYC & Company’s Information Centers, will be distributors of the Archtober calendar guide as well as special promotions. Visit http://www.nycgo.com/designcollection for more information.

Support for Archtober (pronounced ärk't!b!r) comes from an array of patrons and sponsors including Platinum Sponsor Dekton by Cosentino, Kramer Levin, Ford Motor Company, Dwell, New York Magazine, Archinect and Bustler, with visual identity and graphics for Archtober seen all around the city designed by Pentagram. A grassroots effort, all participating organizations support the festival to raise awareness of the role of architects and designers in creating the New York City built environment.

A great building, every day

Among Archtober’s most popular programs are its walking tours and architectural tourism offerings, according to AIA New York Chapter. Most appealing is its “Building of the Day” series, for which architects and other design professionals lead noontime tours of New York’s contemporary buildings and historic sites. Highlights in 2013 include a tour and discussion of the Shake Shack in Madison Square (October 11th) and the UN complex on United Nations Day (October 24th).

In addition, the programs for World Architecture Day on October 7th will also mark the Center for Architecture’s 10th anniversary, with a focus on housing for the next generation. The Architecture and Design Film Festival at Tribeca Cinemas will rank among Archtober’s most popular events, running from October 16th-20th. The Municipal Art Society (MAS) will also host its major annual conference, the MAS Summit for New York City, October 17th-18th.

(Additional select highlights of Archtober 2013 follow, and information on official Archtober 2013 participating organizations is included below.)

“Archtober celebrates New York City, a world design capital,” adds AIA New York president, Jill N. Lerner. “With unparalleled architecture, outstanding design professionals, and cutting-edge cultural institutions, we are proud to welcome guests from around the city and around the world to this annual festival.”
