Harvard Business Publishing Releases New Operations Management Simulation: Quality Analytics
Boston, MA (PRWEB) April 23, 2014 -- Harvard Business Publishing has released its newest simulation, Operations Management: Quality Analytics. It teaches students how to manage quality through the use of analytics related to statistical process control (SPC), process capability, and the cost of quality.
Authored by Barbara Flynn from Indiana University and developed by Harvard Business Publishing, the simulation illustrates key quality control concepts in service, health care, and manufacturing settings. In 4 different challenges, students must calculate control limits, use control limits in real time to maintain control of a process, analyze control charts post hoc to determine whether a process is capable, and make managerial investments in preventive measures.
"The Quality Analytics simulation was designed to teach students how to use analytical quality management tools and interpret quality process data in a dynamic way,” said Heide Abelli, Managing Director of Product at Harvard Business Publishing. "This simulation brings these concepts to life for students in a way that traditional textbooks simply cannot. Process control charts and quality management tools are typically taught using ex post data. In contrast, this simulation allows students to make real-time decisions as new process data becomes available. As a result, students gain a thorough understanding of the essential statistical process control analyses that companies use to manage their processes."
Delivered entirely online via the Harvard Business Publishing for Educators web site, the simulation is appropriate for business undergraduates and MBA students who are taking an introductory operations management course or more advanced courses in quality management, Six Sigma or SPC. It also works well as a mastery exercise after students have completed a module on quality management or SPC. In order to play the simulation, students are expected to have basic knowledge about the purpose of control charts, calculation of control limits for X-bar and R charts, interpretation of control charts, and process capability.
The Operations Management Simulation: Quality Analytics is 1 of 18 simulations available on the Harvard Business Publishing for Educators web site. Online simulations present real-world management challenges for students and encourage classroom interaction and discussion. Results are available immediately for a comprehensive debrief session. All simulations come with a detailed Teaching Note for instructors.
