Ribbon Cutting of Target Field Station, Designed by EE&K, a Perkins Eastman Company, To Take Place on Saturday, May 17, 2014
New York, NY (PRWEB) May 14, 2014 -- In just under two years since the project officially broke ground, Target Field Station is poised for its grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony, scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 17 at 3:00 PM. The new multi-modal transit hub and public plaza is the first of its kind for the region, bringing iconic Open Transit design to the Twin Cities. This milestone will be attended by Mayor Betsy Hodges, U.S. Congressman Keith Ellison, County Commissioner Peter McLaughlin (4th District), County Commissioner Mike Opat (1st District), thousands of city and metro residents, and members of the project design team, led by Peter Cavaluzzi, Principal with EE&K, a Perkins Eastman company.
The project’s design emphasizes the principles of Open Transit by bringing together transit and urban culture into a distinctive destination that enhances commuters’ experience and promotes strengthened community. The mixed-use development comprises more than 104,000 sf of space, including a promenade, two levels of public plaza, office space, as well as restaurants, retail, cultural and entertainment spaces. The station’s Central Connecting Corridor is scheduled to open next month, and in July 2014, Target Field Station will welcome tens of thousands of visitors for Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game at Target Field Stadium.
“Residents and visitors alike will come to know Target Field Station as part of the city’s DNA, a place they can be proud to call their own,” says Cavaluzzi, who is also a University of Minnesota alum. “Some of the most iconic transit places in the world, like Grand Central Station, are about more than transit. This place will attract transit and non-transit users who will enjoy its restaurants, concerts, open green space and more.”
The site includes The Great Lawn, Station Square, and 286 below-grade parking spaces. The Great Lawn will provide the city with new opportunities for pre-game events, community concerts, and seasonal events, while the adjacent 1,000-seat outdoor amphitheater and informal seating area will form The Cascade, a place for entertainment and recreation. This one-of-a-kind development combines live performance space with a major metropolitan transit hub.
In the winter months, all plaza surfaces will utilize an integrated snowmelt system using excess heat generated by the neighboring Hennepin Energy Recovery Center (HERC) to melt snow and ice along walkways and stairs. By using the site’s natural topography and the landscape’s filtering properties, storm water runoff is funneled to a series of cisterns and underground storage systems (capable of storing up to 40,000 gallons), which is then returned to the HERC energy plant as part of sustainability initiatives established by the Watershed District.
The multi-modal station will connect more than 500 trains arriving and departing daily via Metro Blue (Hiawatha) Light Rail Transit (LRT), METRO Green Line (Central Corridor) LRT and Northstar Commuter Rail. It will also act as a central hub for connecting communities by linking the region’s growing commuter and LRT network, as well as miles of new bike paths and walking trails. Visitors can also access daily bus operations that connect the Twin Cities Metro area.
Target Field Station is a project of Hennepin County, the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority, and the Hennepin County Housing and Redevelopment Authority. It is funded by a mix of federal, state and local sources, with more than half stemming from local government. Hennepin County hired EE&K, a Perkins Eastman company, as Architect of Record in June 2012; the project officially broke ground on July 9, 2012.
