Unicon Extends Central Authentication Service (CAS) at Indiana University to Meet Identity and Access Management Needs
Gilbert, AZ (PRWEB) May 20, 2014 -- Unicon, Inc., a leading IT consulting, services, and support provider specializing in open source for the education technology market, today announced that it has extended the Central Authentication Service (CAS) at Indiana University. These extensions, driven by the university’s identity and access management (IAM) needs, address IAM requirements such as two-factor authentication, password policy management, and federated identity. These new CAS capabilities, made possible by Indiana University, will be advantageous to other institutions facing similar IAM challenges.
One of the extensions of CAS was to implement two-factor authentication. Two–factor authentication enhances the security of the IT infrastructure by restricting access to resources to only those designated to have access by the university. Unicon will also establish login interrupts, password expiration policies, and front-channel authentication via SAML. This will further protect university resources by providing features like prompted password changes and restricted federation access.
“CAS is a significant part of our overall identity and access management infrastructure,” said Jacob Farmer, manager of Indiana University’s identity management systems group. “This initiative will add important enhancements that will allow CAS to serve IU [Indiana University] for years to come.”
CAS, designed by higher education for higher education, has long been a popular open source web single sign-on choice for many colleges and universities, and is gaining traction in the corporate sector.
"CAS is the cornerstone of many IAM architectures; this recent work continues to build out a solid foundation of cost-effective open source IAM solutions,” said Bill Thompson, IAM Practice Director, Unicon.
A key success factor of this project was close collaboration among Indiana University staff and the Unicon IAM team facilitated by the use of Bitbucket for source code control and issue tracking. All of this work is contributed back to the CAS community via Unicon’s Open Source Support program. Read more about the program here: http://www.unicon.net/support.
