Recognition from NCATE affirms Bank Street’s commitment to our graduate students and the children they serve.

Bank Street College of Education has earned accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) through 2020 for its master’s degree programs in its Graduate School of Education.

The accreditation recognizes Bank Street Graduate School of Education for meeting or exceeding national standards of quality for teacher and leadership preparation at both the initial and advanced levels. It signifies the quality of a Bank Street education, particularly in the areas of effective fieldwork, diversity of students, and the knowledge and professionalism characteristic of the College’s graduates.

Bank Street College has long been recognized for excellence in teacher preparation by accrediting agencies including the Regents Accreditation of Teacher Education (RATE) of New York, and the Middle States Commission of Higher Education. “Additional recognition from NCATE affirms Bank Street’s commitment to our graduate students and the children they serve,” says Virginia Roach, Dean of the Graduate School of Education. “We welcomed the process of earning NCATE accreditation as a valuable self-study tool,” she adds, “which only strengthens the value we provide to our degree candidates.”

Bank Street Graduate School of Education prepares over 800 master’s degree students annually for education careers both in and out of the classroom. The College’s programs emphasize the marriage of education theory and school-based fieldwork experiences, along with a deep knowledge of child development, as essential elements of effective teacher preparation. Alumni work as teachers, leaders, and founders of schools in New York and nationwide, as well as in non-classroom settings such as healthcare, museums and cultural institutions, government, community-based organizations, and reading and literacy services.

Founded in 1954, NCATE is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a specialized accrediting body for schools, colleges, and departments of education. NCATE and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) have consolidated and are now transitioning into the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
