Report Highlights Benefits of Quality Dental Care for Diabetics, Ventura Prosthodontists Say
WOODLAND HILLS, CA (PRWEB) August 12, 2014 -- Calling attention to a report in the August issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Woodland Hills dental experts Dr. Saj Jivraj and Dr. Mamaly Reshad urge diabetics to receive regular dental care.
“This report shows that diabetics and others with chronic health problems who are treated for their periodontal disease have lower health care costs and fewer hospitalizations,” Dr. Jivraj said.
Other reports have shown that those with diabetes are two to three times more likely to develop gum disease than those without diabetes. The gums will become tender, swell and bleed because of gum disease. Gum disease ultimately leads to tooth loss if left untreated.
Persons with diabetes usually get more severe gum disease than non-diabetics. Gum disease also has a negative impact on glycemic control, according to research.
Diabetics also suffer from burning mouth syndrome and dry mouth more frequently than non-diabetics. Persons with diabetes should document the foods and drinks that give them burning mouth sensation, and they should chew sugar-free gum and drink water to avoid dry mouth.
“Diabetes and these other chronic diseases have one thing in common – inflammation,” Dr. Reshad said. “The research seems to indicate that if you can reduce the inflammation that comes with periodontal disease, you can reduce the effects of these other diseases.”
