Michigan Retailers Join the Pledge to Shop&Recycle for Back2School with ATRS
Detroit, MI (PRWEB) August 06, 2014 -- American Textile Recycling Service (ATRS) kicked off its 2nd annual Shop&Recycle campaign for Back2School this month, inspiring a host of retailers, shopping malls and municipalities to take the pledge towards a cleaner, greener Michigan.
The ongoing initiative raises awareness about the importance of sustainable shopping and charitable giving as families, high schoolers and college students hit the shops to purchase new apparel, school supplies, dorm room bedding and electronics during the third highest revenue-generating season of the year.
Easy, convenient ATRS Clothing & Shoe Recyclers are located onsite at shopping centers throughout the Mitten State. Participating retailers include selected Walmart, Kmart locations and many others. Every item donated benefits Michigan Humane Society and directly funds local pet adoptions, rescue services, spays and neuters in the local community.
The City of Warren has placed a permanent Clothing & Shoe bin at its Recycling Center so residents can easily drop off gently used, outgrown, unwanted clothing, shoe, sporting gear, toys and household textiles for recycling during weekly business hours. With a population of 134,141 the permanent bin could help divert over 8 million pounds of annual textile waste generated in this community.
The Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority (WWRA) has also placed permanent textile recyclers at nine county collection sites including their primary sorting facility in Chelsea MI. Since 2011 the sites have accepted clothing and shoe donations along with newspaper and plastic bottles to motor oil and car batteries. These nine locations have generated approximately 53,000 pounds of unwanted clothing, shoes and other recyclable textiles in the first half of 2014 alone. That’s over 26 TONS of textile waste diverted from local landfills in one small community. For a WWRA drop-off location near you, please visit their website.
"This partnership with retailers and municipalities like the City of Warren will allow us to educate more families in our communities about textile recycling," says Paul Koich Market Team Manager for ATRS in Michigan, "Our goal is to provide enough easy, convenient clothing and shoe drop off locations until recycling is commonplace in every home. This bin at the Warren Recycling Center is a big step which will help us in doing so!"
