This heartfelt event will take place this Thursday, August 28th at 4 p.m. at Off Lease Only's Miami location.
The Holloways – who don’t own a vehicle -- were chosen because of their dire need and Charles Holloway’s extensive volunteerism in the community he loves. Both Charles and Beverly want nothing more than to give back and never ask for anything.
The Holloways walk or take public transportation everywhere. Charles Holloway knows about the minivan but his wife Beverly will be taken by surprise.
At age 61, Charles Holloway takes night classes 5 days a week at the non-profit Urban Construction Craft Academy where he’s learning skills to get a better job. As part of the program, he volunteers in his community, making home repairs for needy seniors, repairing church roofs, or sometimes even pruning trees. To get to his classes, he bikes, rides the bus and takes the train. The trek takes nearly two hours each way. His wife Beverly takes the bus and train to get to her job at a daycare center at Miami Children’s Hospital.
Bill Dozier, who founded the Urban Construction Craft Academy, recommended Charles Holloway to receive the minivan.
“When I got the call about someone who would be worth this blessing, the only person I could think of was Charles,” said Bill Dozier. “When he found out what you guys are doing for him, he started crying. He said, ‘This can’t be true. Nothing like this has ever happened to me.’ I said, ‘You have the biggest heart we know.’”
Off Lease Only owner Mark Fischer said Holloway’s story touched his soul.
“This gentleman only thinks about others. When he was told he would be the recipient of our next car giveaway, not only did he start crying, but he also started trying to figure out everyone that he could help with his new set of wheels," Fischer said. “This van will not only help the Holloways, Charles is already planning on helping as many of his co-volunteers that need rides as well. He has a truly beautiful soul and being in a position to give back makes my wife and me very proud.”
Charles Holloway’s voice quavers when he talks about the minivan. He can’t wait to see the look of delight on his wife’s face on Thursday. He learned about the minivan last week when Dozier took him by the radio station and they surprised him with the amazing news.
“It’s hard to describe how much joy this brings,” Charles Holloway said. “I believe prayer changes things, and when I say my prayers, I put it all in His hands. He had to hear my prayers because there is no way I could have dreamed this. My wife says just believe in your prayers.”
With the minivan, the Holloways can grocery shop, even if it rains; take elderly relatives to the doctor instead of relying on a Medivan; and even enjoy a picnic on the beach. Charles Holloway will no longer have to spend nearly four hours in transit getting to-and-from class.
