The large, suburban California school district cites cloud-based, unified solution as key in making the switch from an appliance

Securly was designed for schools and thus understands our unique environment. Its cloud-based, unified solution saved our district money and resources.

Securly, Inc. – the world's leading cloud-based provider of Internet Security for K-12 schools – today announced it will provide unified web filtering to West Contra Costa USD, a suburban California district that serves over 30,000 students.

As West Contra Costa prepared to implement a new take-home 1:1 program and Common Core initiatives, it would first need to upgrade its network infrastructure. In particular, the district required an increase in its bandwidth downlink from 1GB to 2GB, with an anticipated jump to 10GB not too far ahead. Scaling with their existing appliance-based solution would be a challenge, as this required a costly and time-consuming hardware upgrade. Moreover, an appliance posed the risk of becoming a choke point in the network as the district planned to scale its take-home program.

Mary Phillips, Chief Technology Officer of West Contra Costa, explains how Securly’s cloud-based, unified offering was precisely the solution she had envisioned. “I kept wondering why we couldn’t implement a cloud-based filtering solution and began to investigate this possibility”, says Phillips. “The cloud approach would alleviate the need for new hardware and would solve the challenge of filtering students’ tablets as they went off-site. In addition, Securly was designed for schools and thus understands our unique environment. For example, it was important for us to provide differentiated policies for teachers and students. Securly was easily and effectively able to address this requirement”.
