Alexandria Renew Water Resource Recovery Facility Implements ATI’s IP-based Employee Alarm System

Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew) maintains one of the most advanced water treatment facilities in the United States, on a 35-acre site within walking distance of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. AlexRenew serves about 350,000 people in the City of Alexandria and part of Fairfax County, processing an average of 12 billion gallons of wastewater every year. AlexRenew is committed to being an environmental steward, good neighbor, and industry leader in the day-to-day work of making dirty water clean again.
AlexRenew elected to install ATI’s integrated EAS system to keep the employees safe by providing timely alerts in the case of an emergency such as bad weather, bomb threats, chemical spills, etc. The ATI EAS System will provide voice messages (both pre-recorded and live public address) as well as visual warning strobes throughout the many buildings in the facility.
The system was designed as a joint effort between Johnson Controls, Inc. and the Protection Engineering Group, Inc. (PE Group). The equipment and engineering work was awarded to ATI through a contract from Comint System Corp. of Springfield, Virginia.
Each building requires audible and visual indoor notification as well as a local control panel. ATI’s flexible system architecture provides several ways to meet these requirements. Buildings which already have a PA or voice capable fire panel will be controlled by a PA interface unit. Upon system activation, relays in the PA unit will override the building fire alarm system in each building that the EAS is active.
Buildings without a preinstalled audio system will be using an Indoor Speaker Unit (ISU), which includes a 400 watt Class D amplifier, to drive new speakers and strobes. Each building will also contain an Autonomous Control Unit (ACU) with a compact control panel and microphone which will broadcast the emergency notification to that building and it associated tunnels.
These local systems will be networked to Central Control Stations (CCS) using IP interfaces connected to the facility’s LAN (Local Area Network). (IP is only one of the many communication options ATI provides. Others include optical fiber, UHF/VHF radio, cellular modem and satellite.) The CCS can be used to control any or all of the ACUs throughout the facility, triggering visual warning strobes and live or pre-recorded audio messages precisely where needed.
The EAS will be capable of sending text message and email alerts to a specified list of recipients and can even provide digital signs with text messages. The EAS message can also be broadcast over the facility’s Voice Over IP (VOIP) based telephone system.
