Hope For The Warriors Grants Support to Local Veteran through Home, NASCAR and More
MARTINSVILLE, VA (PRWEB) October 23, 2014 -- NASCAR driver, Ryan Newman, driver of #31, will show his support to a local wounded veteran this weekend at the Martinsville Speedway. As Newman loops the track, he will sport a helmet with a design inspired by local veteran, Cpl. J.B. Kerns, USMC (Ret.) and Hope For The Warriors®, a national nonprofit organization that has assisted Kerns in receiving a new adaptive home earlier this month in nearby Arafat, VA.
Newman’s helmet is a spectacular red, white, and blue with design elements of the United States Flag. The helmet will be donated to Hope For The Warriors® and the nonprofit will auction the helmet at a later date to raise funds for future programs. Hope For The Warriors® is a national nonprofit dedicated to restoring a sense of self, restoring the family unit, and restoring hope for our service members and our military families.
Kerns received the keys to his new adaptive home, made possible in part by a donation of $50K from Hope For The Warriors®. The new home not only provides the OEF Veteran with customized appliances, it also placed him in a community that supports his service. Kerns served as a combat engineer and was on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan in April 2011 when he lost both legs and right arm to an IED. He has undergone dozens of surgeries since the injury and walks using artificial legs, a challenge that this “smart home” aims to tackle.
Hope For The Warriors® was pleased to be part of this connection process for Kerns. The nonprofit has already supported the rehabilitation of Kerns through its Sports & Recreation programs, engaging him with a visit to nearby Martinsville Speedway. There, Kerns first became involved with Hope For The Warriors® when he was the Grand Marshall.
