“As you know the dominant seventh is very powerful in the blues”, says Johnson. Claude starts off this easy blues guitar lesson by demonstrating dominant seventh chords as a substitution for a major chord. Claude demonstrates the dominant 7th arpeggio as follows; 12th fret of the 5th string with 4th finger to the 11th fret of the 4th string with 3rd finger, to the 9th fret of the 3rd string with first finger to the 12th fret with 4th finger to the 10th fret of the 2nd string with 2nd finger to the 9th fret of the first string with first finger and finally the 12th fret with 4th finger. An arpeggio is when the notes of a chord are played separately in a sequence. The word comes from the Italian word apeggiare which means “to play on a harp”.
A Dominant 7th chord or arpeggio is composed of the root, major third, perfect fifth and the minor seventh (flat seventh) notes of the major scale. Its function is to resolve to the tonic note or chord.
The major scale, aka the Ionian Mode, is a seven tone diatonic scale that is widely used in western music. The eighth duplicates the first at double its frequency so that it is called a higher octave of the same note, which its name is derived from Latin "octavus", the eighth.
A Pentatonic Scale is a musical scale with five notes per octave and is very common and found all over the world.
